My Fridge Isn’t Cooling or Freezing – How Do I Know When to Call a San Diego Appliance Repair Company?
Many fridges and freezers stop working when their compressor malfunctions. If this is the case, you should contact a San Diego Appliance Repair Company technician to repair or replace the part.
The first thing you should do is check whether the evaporator fan motor in the freezer section is running. You should also verify that the condenser fan motor is active. These two can both be running, but your fridge will not cool unless the compressor is running properly.
For a closer look, or to access the internal hardware for a DIY repair, remove the back cover panel located at the bottom of your fridge’s backside. It’s generally a good idea to check whether the compressor is getting power, which can be done using a handheld voltmeter or “amp clamp.” A healthy compressor should be pulling between 1.2-1.6 amps when in use; if you notice readings upwards of 4 amps, then there is likely damage to your compressor, and it may need to be replaced.
Let’s assume that the compressor is not running. When it’s time to tuck into the repair, the first thing you’ll need to do is unplug the unit, or cut any power to the appliance by flipping a breaker off.
Next, remove the clip holding the compressor components in place. Once the clip has been set aside, the components should come off easily. One quick and effective way to check whether your compressor component is damaged is to give it a little shake. If you hear any rattling, your compressor component is likely damaged. You will probably have to replace the relay.
