Ways To Clean A Smelly Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal in your home, you know that it can be a great asset to a clean kitchen. However, it can also be an issue when odors start to drift up words. If you notice a scent that is not so pleasant coming from your drain. When you smell something lurking around the garbage disposal, here are a few ways that you can help get rid of it quickly or you have the option of calling in the appliance repair service in San Diego County.

Clean the Visible Portion of the Disposal

Using dish-washing liquid and a scrub brush or dish wand, scrub the disposal part that you can see. You want to particularly scrub any joints that you can reach, where the garbage disposal meets the basin. This is where small food particles can become trapped and mold can also grow here as well.

Soak the Housing

To soak the housing, first place the drain in the sink to hold the water. Fill the sink up halfway with water and then add a little bit of dish liquid or you can use white vinegar. Unplug the drain and activate the garbage disposal. This will turn the dish liquid or the vinegar into a soapy cleaner that will clean the housing area and rinse off the places that don’t normally become wet, releasing any food particles that may be stuck and causing odor.

Dislodge Slimy Residue

That slimy residue is horrible. Once you realize that it is there, you want to get rid of it as soon as possible. Take a little bit of salt in a bowl. Fill the bowl up with ice cubes and give it a toss. Pour it down the garbage disposal and then turn the disposal on. The ice and the salt together will help grind away that residue that may be stuck in the disposal.

Citrus

Do you have company coming over and you notice that your garbage disposal is stinking up your entire kitchen? Citrus is nature’s own deodorizer. Whether it is a lime, lemon, grapefruit, or orange, these citrus fruits can make it possible to eliminate odors quickly. Peel any one of these fruits you may have lying around in your kitchen. Flip on the garbage disposal switch and grind the peels up. The kitchen will immediately smell better.

Routine Flushing

Go ahead and get into the habit of flushing your disposal regularly so that smells don’t have a chance to build up and become loud. Routine flushing of your disposal is necessary in order to keep your disposal from becoming a bacteria trap.

Turn on the disposal and run hot water down the drain for one minute. This will release any food particles through the pipes and reducing the odors that may be coming from the drain.
