What to do if the compressor does not work?

Periodic compressor shutdown is an absolute norm. During this time, the motor cools down, which allows you to extend its life and reduce energy consumption, and the refrigerator maintains the temperature due to the quality layer of thermal insulation in the walls and door. However, if the compressor does not work for more than an hour and at the same time the refrigerator is not set in the mode of reduced power consumption, it is possible to speak about the breakdown of the device. Before making a “diagnosis”, you should make sure that the malfunction really exists.

What is a compressor?

The injection of cold into the refrigerator and the removal of heat into the environment – a direct task of the compressor. Not for nothing it is called the “heart” of the unit: a powerful motor creates a pressure difference in different parts of the cooling system by reducing the volume of refrigerant and its further movement along the heat exchange tubes. Unlike a human, a refrigerator can have either one or two such pistons. In the first case, the temperature decreases or increases all at once in the entire appliance, and in the second case, it can line up individually for the refrigerator and for the freezer.

Check the connection to the power grid

The first thing to do is to make sure that there is electricity in the house. If the power supply is established, the fridge light should be on. Next, check that the appliance is properly connected to the mains, and assess the condition of the plug, wire, and socket for signs of melting.

If your model is equipped with an electronic control panel, make sure the refrigeration unit is on. Since the compressor works cyclically, you should wait 30-40 minutes after plugging it in and if you do not hear a characteristic hum, move on to the next step of the test.

Checking with a glass of water

If the refrigerator is on and the light is on, but you don’t hear the sound of the compressor, it is possible that the No Frost system is defrosting. The defrosting program is performed twice a day and takes about 30 minutes.

There is another much more reliable way to check the compressor for proper operation. To do this, you will need to place a thermometer in a container of water and place it in the center of the refrigerator compartment. After 6 to 8 hours you need to check the thermometer reading with the temperature mode set in the fridge. If the readings match, then the appliance is working properly.

If all else fails

If it is not possible to eliminate the malfunction with the above methods, it is necessary to entrust the inspection and repair of the refrigerator to a certified specialist of the HOME APPLIANCE SERVICE CENTER. Initially, the master will carry out diagnostics of all the systems of the refrigerator, which will help to establish the cause of the strange behavior of the appliance, and then will repair the part or, if necessary, replace it with a new one.
