If there is a puddle under the dishwasher, this is not a reason to panic and get upset. If you find a puddle of water, the first thing to do is unplug the appliance from the mains and cut off the water supply. After that, you should carefully inspect the machine.
If you unplug the dishwasher while it’s running, you should remove all the dishes from the compartment and drain the water (you can read more about how to do this in the instructions).
Dishwasher leaks can occur for a variety of reasons. Some are minor and can be resolved by your own efforts. If, on the other hand, a part fails, you’ll need to have the appliance repaired.
Dishwasher leaks can be categorized into a number of different causes depending on where the water originates.
Water collecting under the machine
If you find water accumulating under the body of the machine or in the front of the machine, the causes of the leak could be as follows:
- A leaking drain/drain hose
Hoses are very delicate components and will develop cracks and fractures over time. In some cases, the manufacturer has delivered the appliance with a defective hose from the outset. The gaskets, which are located where the hoses are fixed, may be leaking.
If a visual inspection reveals a defect in this part, you will need to replace the old hose with a new one. You can do this yourself by purchasing a new part.
- Dishwasher tank leaks
This is a rare problem. You could damage the tank by piercing it with a sharp object. The tank may also burst if the appliance is misused. A factory defect is another problem.
Often a partial disassembly of the appliance is necessary to detect a deformed tank. This is best left to service technicians. Replacing the tank is a very expensive undertaking, so it is best to consider buying a new appliance.
- Door leakage
If water collects in front of the appliance door, the rubber seal is likely to be damaged. It is possible to replace the gasket by yourself. However, due to the need to disassemble the door, it is better to call a technician at home.
- Internal spigots are damaged
As a result of internal damage in the form of broken connections, damaged or completely torn out spigots, or worn rubber parts, water can accumulate in front of or inside the machine.
If you notice the defect you can repair it yourself. However, if you need to replace parts or work deep inside the machine, it is advisable to call a service technician.
The dishwasher leaks during the water intake
If water leaks when the dishwasher is pumping water then the causes are as follows:
- The spout is leaking
The dispenser is a trough in which the detergent is dispensed. Over time un-dissolved powder can build up in it. If you add too much or use sub-standard detergent, then the powder simply does not dissolve. Another reason is that the dispenser is cracked, which causes the water to leak through. The dispenser may also be leaking due to high water pressure. All of these problems can be solved easily and do not require specialized service.
- The water level sensor is defective
If the sensor breaks, too much water is released and leaks to the outside. Replacing the sensor solves this problem.

1 The seals in the dishwasher compartment are damaged
The rubber seals in the compartment may crack, tear or stretch. In such cases, water will appear during washing. The bottom seal is particularly prone to damage. When replacing the seals, the machine is disassembled, so only an experienced technician can carry out the repair.
