The term hard water confuses those customers who might care to use a washing machine. How can water be hard? How could something hard get be placed inside of a washing machine, hoping that it would make the clothes cleaner?
The hardness of water reflects the nature of the land over which it has traveled. As that life-giving liquid flows along, it picks up the minerals in the soil and the rocks. When it has chosen to carry too much magnesium and calcium, then it exhibits characteristics that fail to match with the function of a soap-aiding agent. In the absence of softer water, soap does a poor job of cleaning anything. It allows the water to leave a film on the body of someone that has taken a shower. It encourages formation of spots on dishes washed in a machine. It causes clothes from the washer to appear dull or gray.
Is no solution available?
There are indeed a couple solutions from which a homeowner can select the one that best satisfies his or her needs. For example, there is on the market a mechanical softening system. It adds salt to the water, so that it becomes softer. Homeowners can also purchase one of two types of packaged softeners. One of them contains borax and washing soda; it has been classified as precipitating. The other one contains phosphates, which combine with the calcium and magnesium.
How can a homeowner know whether or not it would be wise to invest in one of the solutions listed above?
There are some people that earn a living by conducting a test, and then supplying the homeowner information on the water’s hardness. Of course, the homeowner must foot the bill for such a test. If a family has suffered with the attempt to feel clean, after taking a shower, why should it have to pay money for a simple test?
The answer is that a simple and inexpensive test can be performed by anyone that has acquired possession of a plastic bottle (one that still has a lid), dish soap and a source of warm clear liquid (water). The bottle should be filled half way with the clear liquid. Then a few drops of dish soap should be placed in the same container. After the bottle has been capped, it needs to get a good shake. Then that cap can be removed. At that point the result can be observed. Did any bubbles form? If not, then the person/homeowner that has conducted the test should think about investing in one of the softening products that are currently on the market.
