We all know that cleaning a glass cooktop can have its frustrations. When you bought your cooktop, no doubt the salesperson told you how easy it was to clean. You now know better.
As San Diego County appliance repair professionals, we get many questions about cleaning these cooktops. Unfortunately, any food that touches your cooktop while it’s hot can leave a scorch mark. Even a boilover of water can leave a mark on your glass cooktop.
It seems as if you are cleaning this surface nonstop. And any specialty cleaning solutions made for glass top stoves can be expensive. But what if you can get that cooktop shiny clean with a few simple ingredients right out of your pantry?
Do you remember elementary school when you made your own volcano from vinegar and baking soda? Cleaning your cooktop uses these same fun ingredients to leave it looking like new without the messy volcano fizz. Have these items handy before you get started:
– A few towels
– A straight edged razor blade
– A bottle of white vinegar
– A box of baking soda
With all burners cool, spray the entire surface of your stove with the white vinegar, then wipe it down with a damp cloth to dislodge any food particles and grease. You can also make your own homemade cleaning solution with a combination dish soap, water, and white vinegar. You can use the following recipe. Just combine the ingredients and keep in a spray bottle:
– About a cup of water
– ¼ of white vinegar
– A few drops of mild dish soap
When you are done wiping the surface down, sprinkle your baking soda over the entire cooktop surface. Baking soda is mildly abrasive without leaving any scratches and its alkaline quality allows it to naturally break down any food or grease residue.
Now wet your towels or a towel that is large enough to cover the entire surface of the stove with hot water. Wring out the towels and lay them on the surface of the stove in order to cover the whole thing. Let this stand for about 15 minutes. After removing the towels, scrub down the surface with a soft cloth making sure to rinse out the cloth often as you go. It may take a few passes of your wet cleaning cloth in order to pick up all the residual baking soda.
If any food residue remains after scrubbing, use your straight edged razor to carefully scrape up any remaining burned on food. Work in small areas in order to avoid scratching the surface. Finish up with a final polish of vinegar and a damp cloth and then use a dry cloth to buff the surface to a shine.
This solution works great even when it looks like your cooktop may be permanently damaged.
