Maintaining your kitchen appliances can save you a lot of money in the long run by keeping you from having to call in repair services, or even worse, forcing you to buy replacements. And why wouldn’t you want them to stay intact and keep doing their jobs? After all, they can be quite the pricey investment.
A little time spent on maintenance may make you groan in annoyance, but you should put into consideration how much money you have spent on each of your appliances, and how much more you’d have to spent if they broke on you, simply because you didn’t feel like taking good enough care of them. The first thing we will tell you is that a little cleaning goes a long way, but to make it easier on you and give you something to orientate yourself with, we have put together a quick guide to maintaining your three most pricey appliances:
Refrigerator: Every month, you should clean out the bin of your ice maker, if you have one, to stop ice blocks from forming at the bottom. Next, check on your freezer and make sure to remove any debris that may have built on the vents. Also be sure to keep the temperature on your freezer at 0 degrees, while your fridge stays somewhere between 35 and 40 degrees – these are the ideal temperatures.
Once every three months, you should scrub down the door gaskets so the cool air remains trapped inside. Sticky gaskets may be tugged out of place upon opening the door which can force your fridge’s motor to work harder to keep the temperature down. Next, you should clean the condenser coils which are located at the bottom or behind the unit. If you have pets that shed a lot of fur or children, these can quickly gather dirt. The condenser fan will also need to be cleaned since it is vital to keeping the air circulating. This fan can accumulate dust and debris over time which will want to avoid. Oven and Stove-Top
Every month, you will want to remove the knobs of your electric stove-top, to wipe the holes. As you do this, don’t let water drip inside or you may short-circuit the wiring. With a gas stove-top, you will want to remove the surface burners and grates so you can soak them in warm water with added soap. Once you’ve pulled them back out, scrub them down to remove any lingering debris before you put them back on your stove.
