We all do it…take our dishwashers for granted. We may even get a bit lazy sometimes and put items in the dishwasher that really shouldn’t go in. But the fact remains that some items simply get ruined if run through the dishwasher continuously. Here are a few items that you may be putting in your dishwasher that are a definite no-no.
Nonstick Cookware
Yes, your nonstick cookware says it’s dishwasher safe. But most nonstick cookware’s coating simply isn’t made to withstand the hot water, intense water pressure, and strong detergent. After a while, the pan’s coating may deteriorate and lose its effectiveness.
Cast Iron Cookware
Some people swear by cast iron. But cast iron cookware’s effectiveness can be destroyed by the dishwasher. Cast iron depends on seasoning. The hot water, detergent, and water pressure of the dishwasher will remove the seasoning. Since cast iron will rust without it, you are left with an unusable pan.
Copper Pans
If you want to ruin a beautiful set of copper pans, put them in the dishwasher. Copper pans are labor intensive as it is and putting them in the dishwasher is a sure way to ruin their beautiful finish.
Wooden Kitchen Items
Although many people throw their wooden cooking items in the dishwasher, if you are concerned about their finish and longevity, it’s probably not a good idea. Wood items can warp and splinter after exposure to hot water over time.
Good Knives
Your typical cutlery butter knives are no problem for a dishwasher but your good set of chef’s knives, not so much. Your good knives will get dull far quicker after being exposed to prolonger dishwasher abuse.
Crystal
Crystal is delicate and simply can’t stand up to the water pressure and heat of the dishwasher.
Glassware and Dishware With Gold Plating
Seriously. If you have invested in these items, you should know better. Your dishwasher will eat away at the gold finish and leave you with an ugly set of dishes that you paid far too much for.
Insulated Mugs, Cups, and Glassware
Insulated items have a seal between an inner and outer layer that provides that insulation. Putting these in the dishwasher runs the risk of getting water inside that space between the inner and outer layer. There goes all your insulation.
Hand Painted China
Many dishes that are hand painted or made from low fired ceramic just aren’t durable enough for the dishwasher.
Aluminum
Disposable aluminum pans or just aluminum, in general, is prone to discoloration in the dishwasher.
Plastic Items
Plastic can be fussy. If not marked specifically safe for the dishwasher, you can have a melted mess in the bottom of your dishwasher after the heat of the dry cycle. Even dishwasher safe plastic should be washed on the upper rack of your dishwasher.
The dishwasher is a wonderful invention but it can be hard on some items. Play it safe and hand wash them to avoid ruining your good kitchen items.
